Description
On 14 February we are joining independent bookshops nationwide to raise funds for the PEN Emergency Fund for Writers at Risk. Money raised will be used to provide visa support for writers trying to leave Gaza, as well as offering general financial support to writers in and from Palestine.
Across the UK, indie bookstores will hold their own special events, including readings, with door prizes donated by publisher partners. All proceeds will go through a central page donating to English PEN (a registered UK charity), who will transfer all funds raised to the PEN Emergency Fund, based in Amsterdam.
La Biblioteka are proud to be one of the participating bookshops and will be holding a raffle with some incredible prizes that have been donated to us which can be found listed below.
Raffle tickets are £6 each (suggested) or £25 for five and can be purchased either online or in the shop up until February 14th. The raffle will be drawn by bookshop staff and winners of the prizes will be contacted (so please ensure that you leave the correct contact details with us when making your purchase).
N.B. Free postage is available to those within the UK only.

About the PEN Emergency Fund
Based in the Netherlands, the now globally operating PEN Emergency Fund was founded by the writer A. den Doolaard in 1971. It supports seriously persecuted writers and journalists, sometimes living in exile, with a once-only allowance that helps them (and in special cases, their families) to make ends meet when, for instance, they need to flee the country immediately or require urgent medical attention following abuse. Every year dozens of writers throughout the world are provided with aid.
About English PEN
English PEN is one of the world’s oldest human rights organisations, championing the freedom to write and read. We are the founding centre of PEN International, a worldwide writers’ association with 130 centres in more than 90 countries. With the support of our members – a community of readers, writers, and activists – we protect freedom of expression whenever it is under attack, support writers facing persecution around the world, and celebrate contemporary international writing with literary prizes, grants, events, and our online magazine PEN Transmissions.
